Managing a Profile

WikiTree is a global tree and owned by all of us. Each profile can have one or more managers (caretakers) that tend to it. So what is the difference between 'managing' a profile and being on a profile's 'Trusted List'?

  • Profile Managers: The profile manager has primary responsibility for a WikiTree profile. The profile manager sets the privacy level and manages the Trusted List. Profile managers do not own that profile, they simply watch over it. Profile managers:
    • Receive merge proposals via e-mail.
    • Receive Trusted List requests via e-mail.
    • Receive notices about comments posted on the profile via e-mail.
    • Can delete inappropriate comments and memories.
    • Can adjust the privacy level.
    • Can add and remove other managers.
    • On project-protected profiles, the manager can edit parents, along with Project Coordinators and Leaders.
  • Trusted List members: If you're on a Trusted List you have full viewing and editing rights on the profile. You will also get notifications if anyone makes changes to that profile. Trusted Lists are a tool for privacy. They're not meant for excluding descendants who disagree on the facts. You can request to be added to a Trusted List by clicking the request link on the profile. To view or modify a profile's Trusted List, click the Privacy tab on the profile. You do not have to be a descendant to be on a Trusted List. Unless the profile is for a living person you shouldn't deny a person the right to be on a Trusted List if they aren't a descendant.
Note: Your Watchlist may contain more than just your ancestors. If you want to see your ancestors only (without removing yourself from the other profiles) click HERE.

Request to be Added to a Profile

Click on the profile's Privacy tab
1

Scroll down to 'Join this List' then on 'Click here to request to join this list.'
2

Add a comment before sending. If you would like to be a Profile Manager with them instead of just on the Trusted List put that request in the box as well.
3

Your request will be delivered via email. If they don't respond after a week or more look at the Unresponsive Managers Help to see what the next steps are.

Removal from a Profile

You can either remove yourself as a Manager (see above for the difference between a Profile Manager and the Trusted List members) or remove yourself entirely from the profile.

Remove Yourself as a Manager

Click on the Privacy tab for management tools
1

To the right of your name click on 'Remove as Manager.' This will leave you on the Trusted List for that profile.
2

Remove Yourself Entirely

Click on the Privacy tab for management tools
3

To the right of your name click on 'Remove as Manager.' Next click on 'Remove Yourself.' (Note: It is important to do these two steps in this order. If you simply click 'Remove Yourself' then you can't remove yourself from the profile without adopting it and repeating the steps).
